Members: Cheryl Tomblin, Ryan Shepherd, David Walker & Michael Krayniak.
Bio
PIPES' music and lyrics have been described as being dark and melancholy, holding the audience captivated by cyclic guitar riffs, poignant and unlikely orchestration with smoky vocal undertones.Cheryl Lynn Tomblin, creator of PIPES, was born in Ronceverte, WV but grew up in Maywood, IL. She began playing piano at 7 years old, violin at 10 and at 17 she picked up the guitar which propelled her into the musical arena.
PIPES started as a collaborative effort of musicians that wanted to give new depth to Tomblin's solo work as a singer/songwriter. Current members include David Walker (lead guitar), Ryan Shepherd (Drums), Mike Krayniak (Bass).
In 2015 PIPES was asked to join Wire Recorders, a new record label spurred from Chris Neville and Jon Smith (Co-Owners of WIRE in Berwyn, IL) and their want to bring their music community, known as the Veltway, to greater heights. With this came the release of PIPES first full band album "Those Ramblings on the Wall," a four song EP that would demonstrate the breadth of musical stylings that Tomblin, Walker, Shepherd and Krayniak could offer. Quite different from PIPES first EP, titled "Allow Me the Pleasure," which employed a minimalistic craft that was both haunting and hypnotic, relying solely on two instruments - guitar and vocal - to beguile the listeners fancies. The first run of the CD sleeves for the album were handmade by the songwriter and can be ordered through www.pipesproject.bandcamp.com. Influences for the band run the gambit: Radiohead, Alice in Chaines, P.J. Harvey, Robert Johnson, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and even more to add to PIPES' eclectic resonance.
PIPES has performed in venues throughout the Chicagoland area including The Burlington, Uncommon Ground,The Flat Iron Arts Building, Reggie’s, Elbo Room, Double Door, Wire, The Friendly Tap & FitzGerald’s Nightclub.
